Horror of Human Trafficking
By Christy Mcfarland
Some of you are familiar with the recent rocumentary, Call+Response. It was created in an effort to expose the realities of human trafficking and slavery today. When we hear this topic mentioned, most of us in the United States immediately think of our nation’s history with native American Indians and Africans. However, the disturbing truth is that there are over 27 million people, many young children, who are victims of human trafficking. The United States is not exempt from this modern form of slavery. Many victims are lured to the U.S. with promises of education and, instead, forced into prostitution and given no escape. A friend recently tagged this blog post on del.i.cious. The language of the poem will be surprising. Disturbing. The imagery is ugly. Dark. Yet as I read the words I also know that there is hope. Hope for safety. Healing. Rescue. It is easy to degrade the antagonist of this poem. Yet, I would challenge the purpose and impact of of our passivity in these matters. What impact can our lives have? Should it have? When does our isolation and self-protection become less about protection and more about ignorance? Essentially, the poem is disturbing because we can recognize ugliness and beauty in the poem, but we can create the imagery so well in our minds because it touches at aspects of our own character. The narcissism of the “man” in this poem was sickening. But, how often do I act in a way that damages or ignores another person so that I can remain at the center of my attention? And the genuine desire of the girl to be a princess … to be loved, even in the middle of such brutality. We all understand the desire to be known and loved.
